Denver, Colorado: Explore the Mile High City

Denver is a city where urban life and Colorado’s outdoors come together. With the Rocky Mountains visible from many parts of the city, a wide variety of neighborhoods, and thousands of local businesses, there is always something new to explore.

Known as the Mile High City because it sits about 5,280 feet (one mile) above sea level, Denver has developed into one of Colorado’s best-known destinations while maintaining the individual character of its neighborhoods. Historic streets, modern developments, locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, boutiques, galleries, and service businesses all contribute to the city’s diverse personality.

Downtown Denver

Union Station, Denver, CO

For many visitors, downtown is a natural starting point. Denver Union Station is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and a convenient gateway to the surrounding area. The beautifully restored station is surrounded by restaurants, hotels, shops, and entertainment, making it easy to continue exploring on foot.

Nearby, LoDo (Lower Downtown) combines historic buildings, restaurants, bars, shops, and some of the city’s oldest streets. Larimer Square adds another distinctive part of downtown, with historic architecture and a collection of restaurants and businesses. The recently transformed 16th Street provides another way to explore the heart of the city, with businesses, public spaces, and attractions along the route.

Big Blue Bear, Denver, CO

One of Denver’s most recognizable public art installations can also be found downtown: I See What You Mean, better known as the Big Blue Bear. The 40-foot-tall sculpture leaning against the Colorado Convention Center has become one of the city’s most photographed landmarks.

From downtown, it’s easy to discover that Denver’s personality extends well beyond its central streets.

Exploring Denver’s Neighborhoods

Beyond downtown, Denver’s neighborhoods offer their own distinct character. RiNo (River North Art District) is known for colorful murals, galleries, restaurants, breweries, and creative spaces. One of the neighborhood’s most eye-catching buildings is One River North, a modern apartment tower known for its dramatic exterior design featuring a large canyon-like opening that runs through the building. Another neighborhood, Highland, combines historic architecture with independent restaurants, shops, and other local businesses.

One River North, Denver, CO

Further south, Cherry Creek offers a different atmosphere, with shopping, dining, boutiques, galleries, and other local businesses. Capitol Hill, South Broadway, Five Points, and the Art District on Santa Fe each bring their own mix of history, culture, food, and locally owned businesses.

Exploring these areas is a great way to see a different side of Denver and discover businesses that may not be found in the city’s main tourist areas.

Denver’s Sports Venues

Sports are a big part of life in Denver, and the city has several major venues that bring fans and visitors throughout the year.

Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, is located in the heart of LoDo and is one of Denver’s most recognizable sports landmarks. The stadium is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and businesses that become especially active on game days.

Ball Arena is home to the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and Colorado Mammoth. Just west of downtown, Empower Field at Mile High is home to the Denver Broncos and is another major gathering place for sports fans.

All three venues also host concerts and other major events throughout the year, bringing even more visitors into the city and surrounding neighborhoods.

Arts, Culture, and Entertainment

Denver also has a strong cultural scene. Museums, galleries, theaters, concert venues, public art, and community events give residents and visitors plenty of reasons to spend time in the city.

“Man, Woman” at the Denver Performing Arts Complex

The Denver Art Museum, Clyfford Still Museum, History Colorado Center, and Museum of Contemporary Art Denver are among the places where visitors can explore art, history, and Colorado’s cultural heritage.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is another major part of the city’s cultural scene, presenting Broadway tours, locally produced theater, cabaret performances, and other events across its theaters in the heart of downtown.

Parks and the Outdoors

Despite its urban setting, Denver offers plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. City Park, Washington Park, and the Denver Botanic Gardens offer green spaces and gardens throughout the city, while parks and trails along the South Platte River provide opportunities for walking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors.

Denver’s location also makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the mountains. Within a relatively short drive, visitors can reach scenic mountain roads, hiking trails, mountain towns, lakes, and other destinations that showcase Colorado’s natural landscape.

Food, Shopping, and Local Businesses

Denver’s neighborhoods are filled with businesses that reflect the diversity of the city. Independent restaurants and coffee shops sit alongside boutiques, breweries, salons, professional services, specialty stores, and many other locally owned businesses.

From a small neighborhood café to a long-established restaurant or a local service provider, these businesses are an important part of the communities they serve. Exploring them can also be a great way to experience parts of Denver beyond the major attractions.
